Representative Jim McDermott (WA-D) with Anti-Flag, a popular punk rock group with a protest song related to depleted uranium.
...
URANIUM WORKER: Harold Cardwell
The 235 uranium was used to make the atomic bomb, but what happened to the 238 materials?
The 238 was depleted materials. It went to Ohio and Kentucky, and much of it is still there today in huge barrels - row after row of depleted materials. And a lot is in Nevada, in caves. Young people can´t understand how much of this depleted material there is - acres and acres of it.
Military armor and weapons used in Iraq are made with depleted uranium. Do you think the materials need special handling?
The personnel in the Army have not been trained to handled residue from uranium. The wrong that has been done is, for those who have never had experience in working around radiation, they should be told. Even after 60 years, exposure could come back to affect you.
Will the residue from exploded armaments remain radioactive?
As long as the particles exist, it´s going to be radioactive for hundreds of years, in my opinion, unless they can show that they have decontaminated it in some way.
During your research, no one told you about the harm radiation could do. You are blind, have had skin cancer and other health problems. Do you relate your problems to radiation exposure?
I have had a lot of health problems all through the years, and the jury is still out.
